My mondeo tdci 130 has developed a noise like air escaping when accelerating hard from about 1800 rpm. There doesnt seem to be a loss of power as yet but the engine feels rougher. Show More The 7.3 Power Stroke engine is a turbocharged diesel unit, so the turbo failure is one of the most obvious reasons the problem could occur. Checking the turbocharger is one of the first things you should do. Air intake problems. The power is formed when air is mixed with fuel and is sent to combustion chambers. I just bought a 2.0 TTDI from 2001 and also have problems with the noise. Its a low roaring sound with appears above 2000rpm. (sounds to me like you drive without an airfilter) The ford dealer says its normal for this car. I think it might be a resonance of air in the airintake, or filterhousing due to the turbo.
